FIRST FULL CLUTCH OF BLUEBIRD EGGS IN INCUBATION FOR 2014.

FIRST FULL CLUTCH OF BLUEBIRD EGGS IN INCUBATION FOR 2014.

Date of first egg laid was March 31. As of yesteday’s date (April 9, 2014), the trail presently consists of 22 bluebird nests, some with eggs; 3 Carolina Chickadee nests in progress; a full House Wren nest with a clutch of 5 eggs (they beat the bluebirds for the whole season in nesting!); and a possible Tree Swallow nest.

  1. After hosting BB here for three years, the BB I fed all winter decided to nest elsewhere! I am snubbed by BB! They return to eat here, yet NO nest. Go figure. Good luck with your trail this season. This cold snap may do many eggs in. ;-(

    • Maybe you weren’t snubbed. Some of my most successful nesting boxes on my trail are void of bluebirds this year. Due to our very long, cold, and harsh winter of snow and ice, it’s very possible some of our birds, bluebirds, included, have perished. I don’t see bluebirds not wanting to come back to your nest site unless they can’t anymore. Perhaps a hawk got the male. There could be various reasons. I was very surprised my successful boxes have no bluebirds in them at all–after at least 3 years of success in that location. Strange. You will get more, don’t worry! Just wait it out…even if it might take a nesting season.

      • I am feeding the wintering pair, yet they are nesting elsewhere! At least I see their pretty selves at my feeders many times per day. Thanks for the words of support! I needed them! Happy birding and kudos to you and your trail work! Diane
